The Raaga Experience

At Raaga Experience, we don’t just organize events – we curate encounters with India’s artistic soul. Whether it’s an intimate one-night performance or a multi-day journey, each experience is designed to be exclusive, deeply personal, and unforgettable.

Imagine stepping into a centuries-old auditorium, where the rhythmic footwork of a Bharatanatyam dancer reverberates through timeworn wooden floors. Picture yourself inside an ancient temple, as the first haunting notes of a “Prabhat” or dawn raga rise with the morning mist. Feel the desert wind carry the soulful strains of Manganiyar folk melodies under a starlit sky. From private “baithaks” with maestros to performances in royal palaces, hidden courtyards, and sacred spaces, each experience is carefully curated to immerse, inspire, and transform.

India is a land where art is devotion, music is prayer, and dance is storytelling. With Raaga Experience, you engage with some of the country’s most celebrated artists, each a master of their craft, performing in settings that elevate the experience from a performance to a sacred moment of connection. Whether it’s the hypnotic chants of Sufi qawwals, the melodic poetry of a Veena recital, or the ancient rhythms of temple drummers, every experience is designed to resonate not just in your ears but in your soul.

Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur: A Voice That Walked Lightly and Moved Deeply

Padma Vibhushan Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur was an eminent khyal singer of the 20th century (1910–1992), belonging to the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana.

He was best known for his command over rare (aparichit) ragas, including Raag Bihari, Lajawanti, Hem Nat, among others, as well as for his constant, mercurial improvisations in melody and metre, without compromising the emotional content of the songs. Listening to his renditions is like experiencing the lightest tread on water - immersive, blissful and profoundly soulful.

Padma Bhushan Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty is a renowned composer, lyricist, and an exponent of the Patiala-Kasur gharana. Balamuralikrishna - allowed him to expand his musical expression and repertoire to its present form.

A recipient of several prestigious awards including the Padma Shri (2011), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2000), Kumar Gandharva National Award (1993), Tansen Samman (2015), and the Maha Sangeet Samman and Banga Bibhushan, he was also awarded Best Male Playback Singer for film music (1990). A Voice That Carries Centuries: Pandit Chhannulal Mishra

Padma Vibhushan Pandit Chhannulal Mishra is one of the most recognisable faces of the Kirana Gharana, blending his extraordinary knowledge of the intricate nuances of ragas with a deeply emotive and melodious voice.

Born in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, he received his initial training from his father, Pandit Badri Prasad Mishra, before moving to Varanasi to continue his training under the noted Kirana Gharana exponent Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan. It was here that the eminent musicologist, Padma Bhushan Thakur Jaidev Singh, recognised his potential and expressed his desire to train him in the Guru-Shishya parampara. Under his tutelage, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra developed his own unique, inimitable style of singing.

Pandit Chhannulal Mishra’s ability to beautifully blend various Gharana styles into his own is what truly sets him apart. His lyrical renditions are inspired by the Kirana Badhat and the Patiala Gharana’s exquisite embellishments, resulting in a melodious fusion of the Punjab, Purab, and Gaya styles - a sound that has mesmerised audiences for over six decades.

Known equally for his spiritual leaning and vast knowledge of scriptures, he has rendered soul-stirring interpretations of the Ramcharitmanas, Shiv Vivah, Sundarkand, Krishna leelas, and Stutis of Shakti, among others.

Pandit Chhannulal Mishra is perhaps best known for his light classical vocals - renditions sung in an effortlessly mellifluous tonal fabric which have earned him an enormous following among lovers of classical and semi-classical music. His contributions have been recognised with numerous honours, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the Padma Bhushan (2010), and the Shiromani Awards by the governments of Bombay, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.

In Brotherhood and Raga: The Timeless Journey of Rajan & Sajan Mishra

Padma Vibhushan Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Mishra are perhaps the most recognisable faces of the khayal style of Indian classical music, having forged an inimitable style of singing together for nearly 60 years.

Born into the coveted Benaras Gharana, renowned for its continuous tradition of nurturing Indian classical musicians, they inherited over six generations and 300 years of musical lineage. Trained initially by Bade Ram Das ji, they later received extensive guidance from their father, Hanuman Prasad Mishra, and their uncle, the sarangi virtuoso - Gopal Prasad Mishra. They were inducted into formal performance at a tender age through the “Haazri” tradition at the Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi, a legacy they upheld every year. It was through this shared journey that the duo decided to sing together for life.

Known for their melodic vocal style interwoven with traditional and vernacular poetry and a deep emphasis on lyrics as vessels of emotion, the virtuoso brothers formed profound connections with audiences over the years. Their hummable, relatable compositions have crossed over into the work of many fusion artists and adjacent genres of Indian music.

After the untimely passing of Pandit Rajan Mishra due to COVID-related complications in 2021, Pandit Sajan Mishra took a hiatus from performance to recover from the immense personal loss. Thankfully, he has since returned to music, drawing strength from his love and respect for his late brother, and now performs alongside his son, Swaransh Mishra, offering audiences around the world deeply moving renditions. Together, they also run a Gurukul, rooted in the Guru Shishya parampara, called Viraam, located in Uttarakhand.

Padma Bhushan Ustad Rashid Khan: A Voice for the Ages

Padma Bhushan Ustad Rashid Khan was arguably the defining Hindustani music artist of his generation, excelling at combining a medley of melody and technique, and bringing modernity to his vocal style, already laden with rich emotional overtones. Belonging to the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, he came from a family of star-studded maestros, receiving his initial training from his grand-uncle Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan and his uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khan.

Known for practising single notes for entire days, his rigorous early training left a permanent mark on his mastery of taan and laykari. He performed at his first concert at the age of 11, and, by 14 had joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta in 1980. By 1994, he was already acknowledged as a scholar musician, called a guru, and taught at the same academy until 1998. Though heavily influenced by Ustad Amir Khan and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, mastering the taankari and sargams, he chose to create his own unique style rather than emulating them. He also actively experimented with fusing Hindustani classical music with lighter genres - Sufi, jugalbandis with instrumentalists, and collaborations with Western musicians in concerts and records.

Awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006, his meteoric career was cut short by cancer, to which he succumbed in 2024, aged 55. In his obituary by BBC News, it was noted that “he enjoyed the kind of commercial success and public adulation that was elusive to classical Indian musicians, and his untimely death robbed India of one of its finest and most popular vocalists."

The Voice That Touched the Stars!

Kesarbai Kerkar, Padma Bhushan (1953) and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee (1969), was arguably the most prominent khayal singer of the later half of the 20th century.

Hailing from a small village in North Goa, she trained under Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, before learning further from Barkat Ullah Khan, Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale, and Ustad Alladiya Khan (founder of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana).

From an early age, she demonstrated her artistic prowess, moving away from light classical singing as was customary for women singers of that time. She was very particular about the representation of her work, recording very few 78rpm recordings, and achieved wide recognition in aristocracy - her success as a public singer paving the way for future generations of classical vocalists. The Government of Maharashtra conferred upon her the title of “Rajya Gayika”, and Rabindranath Tagore fondly referred to her as “Surashri” - one who had mastered the notes.

The Kala Academy, Goa, holds an annual music festival (named after her) in her honour, while the University of Mumbai has instituted a music scholarship in her name. However, her lasting legacy is perhaps her 3+ minute recording of “Jaat Kahan Ho” in Raag Bhairavi, chosen for the Voyager Golden Record - a selection of world music preserved aboard the spacecrafts Voyager 1 & 2 in 1977. Ethnomusicologists have called it “the finest recorded example of Indian classical music”, a tribute now traveling through interstellar space.
